“Retirement Reconsidered 2025”: The 50+ Generation Redefines Retirement

70% plan to remain active beyond 65

According to the national survey Retirement Reconsidered 2025, conducted by F&G Annuities & Life, most Americans over 50 are re-evaluating retirement: seven in ten plan to delay it or continue working in some capacity beyond age 65.

The main reasons are economic uncertainty and the desire to stay active. About 48% fear they won’t have enough savings, 44% blame inflation, and 42% seek greater financial flexibility.

Perhaps most striking: 29% of retirees are considering returning to work, a trend that climbs to 54% among Generation X. The notion of full, permanent retirement is fading, giving way to a new stage of flexible work, consulting, mentoring, or senior entrepreneurship.

“Retirement no longer means stepping away — it means contributing differently,” the report concludes.

For FIFTIERS, this confirms what we’ve always believed: age is not an ending, but a reinvention. With health, experience, and networks, people over 50 aren’t retiring from life — they’re reinventing it.
